Hello! Welcome to ETCH Jobs of the Week, where we highlight a selection of interesting roles across the EdTech ecosystem. To make sure you see this email every week, we encourage you to subscribe!
Before we get to the jobs, let’s take a look at the controversy surrounding the open AI/ML positions at Netflix offering up to $900K in total compensation.
Comedian, Catastrophe star, and Black Mirror actor Rob Delaney called Netflix “ghoulish” for offering “$900K per soldier to their godless AI army.” One wonders if they could have avoided catching flack from Mr. Delaney if they lowered their annual comp range $300K to $699K, just below the $700K per year that Mr. Delaney apparently makes.
The breadth of the comp range for this and other positions at Netflix is also causing some confusion. How could the range for an Engineering Manager (EM) be $180K to $900K? Most likely due to California's pay transparency law, which compels an employer to disclose salary ranges in job postings. Netflix describes these ranges as a "market range," which is "based on total compensation (vs. only base salary)," so it likely varies widely by team and experience.
However, Glassdoor does provide an interesting, though self-reported, breakdown of what this compensation structure could look like:
Using the above proportions, my “back of the napkin” $900K pay package for the AI/ML Ghoul position breaks down as follows:
If Netflix were interested in a more transparent approach to posting open roles, they might break up these postings into different levels (e.g., EM I, EM II, EM III), with smaller compensation ranges and specific job responsibilities.
Regardless, if you get an interview at Netflix and they ask what your comp requirements are, one possible way to answer that question is... "fortunately, I'm in a position in my career where I really don't need a penny over $900K."
Now, let’s get to the Jobs of the Week…
This week, we feature a selection of AI/ML jobs in education. Spoiler alert: none of the ranges below touch the $900K mark, but I’m pretty confident most mortals will be able to make a living off of them.

CZI shifting focus I guess, with both recent layoffs and new hiring. Feels like a shame, but maybe it’s more of a pivot than shutting down the whole focus area? How many were on the CZI education team pre-layoff?
