This week on JOTW, let’s kick things off with a brief journey through workplace evolutionary history:
2.5m B.C. to 10,000 B.C. - Cave
12,000 B.C. to 1800 - Field
1800 to 1980 - Factory
1850 to 2000 - Office with doors
1970 to 2010 - Cubicle w/ a schtickle of telecommuting
2000 to 2020 - Hip offices and coworking spaces, with cold brew on tap, massage chairs, laundry service, and slides.
2020 to 2023 - Remote work (pandemic)
2023 to…? - Hybrid work with smaller offices. Cold brew downgraded to Keurig.
Where will things normalize? Hard to say, but it looks like Goldman Sachs employees are reaching their breaking point:
According to a recent survey, 80% of bosses regret instituting hybrid paired with return-to-office (RTO) mandates. The surveyed bosses lamented not having a better understanding of employee preferences, and blamed insufficient data. Apparently, employees don’t like getting emails from their higher-ups with the subject, “RTO! No WFH!”
Hybrid done right seems to be about balancing structure, boundaries, and expectations with professional autonomy and discretion.
Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits mix. It requires company leadership to make informed decisions based on an understanding of their employees' relationships, quality data on preferences, and clarity around the actual work employees do on any given day (e.g. "office days" should be more involved than sitting on Zoom calls all day).
With more hybrid work opportunities hitting the job boards, it is important for:
Employers to be clear and upfront by what they mean by hybrid work, expectations and all (e.g., # of days per week, are there specific required days in office, will local IPA’s be waiting for me at 5pm?)
Candidates to be candid - firstly with themselves - regarding their hybrid work needs, preferences, and how far they are willing to bend for the right opportunity.
Now, let’s get to the Jobs of the Week…
This week we’ve curated a selection of the top hybrid opportunities from across the education innovation ecosystem in major US metropolitan areas.
