Job seekers often ask me, “What else can I be doing besides just applying to jobs online?” This question is understandable, as simply submitting your resume into what feels like the digital abyss that is online applications can be disheartening. Think of an effective job search as a quiver of arrows; applying to jobs online is just one tactic. It’s often necessary, but it shouldn’t be your only shot.
While there are a lot of other arrows to add to your quiver (e.g., meetups, conferences, networking events, joining niche online communities like FOHE), today we’ll focus on implementing a cadence of LinkedIn outreach. Specifically, we’ll discuss how to target the 5 to 10 organizations that have caught your eye.
Here’s the Strategy:
Identify the Hiring Manager: When applying to a job, review the job description carefully to determine who the hiring manager might be, and note the actual Job Poster if revealed on LinkedIn.
Research the Company on LinkedIn: Scan for profiles of the hiring manager, the lead recruiter, and/or the head of HR. In smaller organizations, consider connecting with the head of operations or a founder - especially those displaying the “Hiring” frame on their profile.
Connect: Send personalized connection requests. For instance, “Hi [First Name], I’ve been a big fan of what y’all are doing with [XYZ], so much so that I decided to apply to the [Job Opening]. Would love to connect and learn more. Cheers, [Your Name].” Note: While I’m a big fan of “y’all;” I realize y’all might not be, so use your own voice!
Follow-Up: If they accept your connection request, send a follow up message and show you've done research on the company by saying something about what specifically you appreciate.
Experiment: You can also experiment with InMailing people and using LinkedIn’s new “Draft a message with AI” feature. However, use the AI-generated content as a starting point, and be sure to modify it into something that is truly your voice and interesting. Wishing them a happy birthday is not interesting! I also can’t wait for LinkedIn to release their AI-detection tool for inMail recipients ;-)
Is it worth the effort?
Absolutely. Sending an InMail to a recruiter or hiring manager, following up with a thoughtful message, or even an email, can substantially improve the likelihood of your application being reviewed (or given a second glance) by an actual human. For instance, I recently forwarded the InMail below to the recruiter responsible for a CFO search we were leading.
I’m also scheduling a call with a candidate after receiving their connection request and follow-up messages below:
So what are you waiting for? Go forth and connect, message, and InMail (but in your own voice please)!
