Now that back-to-school is in effect, my AM schedule has shifted to:
7:30am - Wake up call for kids
7:33am - Kids dressed
7:35am - Teeth brushed
7:37am - Hair brushed
7:40am - Downstairs eating cereal
7:41am - Take dog out and let chickens out to free rangeĀ
7:55am - Get oldest out to catch bus
8:01am - Bus arrives
BUTā¦ yesterday, 8:05am came and went and still no bus. Frank, my neighbor, calls to let me know our chickens have meandered over to his yard. How bad is it if I leave my 2nd grader on the curb while I go to quickly round up the chickens? Frank and the chickens can wait.Ā
I start making mental contingency plans in case the bus is a no-show. How am I going to herd the poultry, and then drive my daughter to school in time?
8:10am - My wife forwards me an automated text advising that the bus is running about 10-15 minutes late, which is weird because I was getting these texts last year but I guess not this year.Ā Ā
8:15am - Bus arrives, all good.Ā
This minor sequence of events got me thinking about BusTech. Softbank kicked off the trend with a megaround (as they like to do), leading school transport startup Zumās a $130 million Series D round in 2021. Shortly thereafter, HopSkipDrive raised their own Series D, a $37M round to address the bus driver labor shortage through their CareDriver program. And rounding out the funding news (for now) is BusRight, which completed a $7M Series A just a few months ago.
Oh, And if you ever see a car pass a bus while ignoring the flashing red lights and stop sign, rest assured thereās a good chance BusPatrol caught the āstop-armā violation on camera. Drive safe and be patient, my kids could be on that bus!
These ventures are representative of three major trends impacting BusTech:Ā
Green: There is $5B in funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to transition from diesel-powered buses to electric.Ā
Alternative transport and routing: With the school bus driver shortage, there is more investment in the analytics behind route optimization as well as alternative forms of transport like the CareDriver program.
Connected buses outfitted with safety and security equipment like BusPatrol, as well as Wi-Fi on board. Imagine a perfectly tranquil bus with students spending their bus-time (40 min per day on average) studiously completing their ābusworkā ;-)Ā
Postscript: Frank and the chickens made peace. All chickens are accounted for and back in their coop.
Now, letās get to the Jobs of the Weekā¦
